Irish Minister Calls For Politicians To Be Protected From Protests

Ireland’s Justice Minister Helen McEntee said last night that she would look into creating “safe spaces” for politicians and that protests near the homes of public figures were “crossing a line.”

McEntee was speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.

According to the RTÉ news website:

The murder of the British MP David Amess in the UK last month highlighted the issue of the security and safety of politicians.

This has also become an issue of public concern in Ireland in the light of protests at the homes of public figures, including Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, Chief Medical Dr Officer Tony Holohan and broadcaster Joe Duffy.

The minister said that while she did not feel unsafe as a minister, there were times in public life when she did not feel safe.

Ms McEntee said the Department of Justice is carrying out a review of the safety of office holders and she would await the outcome before deciding which way to proceed.

The review covers politicians, but not the security of other public figures.

“There are always places where people can protest,” she said, “but when it moves to a person’s home, that’s crossing a line.”

How dare the Irish protest the loss of their livelihoods and their liberties eh? How very dare they! What planet is McEntee on? I hope she’s petrified. I hope that charlatan Varadkar and the gormless Micheál Martin are shitting themselves.

What else can people do? The government and the media are working in tandem to destroy people’s lives and turn the country into a virtual gulag. Are they supposed to just shut up and take it? Hell no!

Let me be unequivocal. The people have an inalienable right to protest outside the homes of journalists and politicians. They should however, always be mindful of the welfare of children. They should NEVER assault nor threaten to assault the people they are protesting against. Violence is indefensible.

Keeping that in mind, if you want to stand across the street from the home of a government minister and let him/her know what they are doing to you and your family, have at it.

So they want safe spaces for politicians and journalists eh? Maybe it’s not over just yet.
