London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed this morning, that he is looking at charging drivers by the mile in order to encourage people to take less car journeys. Khan said that in order to meet net zero targets, the capital needs to see a reduction in car traffic by nearly one third by 2030.
He told SKY’s Kay Burley this morning:
“We need to encourage people to walk and make public transport an attractive alternative. I’ve also asked TfL to investigate the world’s first smart road user charge in, so we can replace all the current schemes we have and people pay per mile based on the car, how polluting it is, based upon the distance travelled, the time of day, what part of London they’re in.”
The sale of new diesel and petrol cars will be banned from 2030. This will leave a £37 billion hole in the public finances. It will also see the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs. The Treasury has acknowledged that new taxes will need to be introduced to cover the shortfall.
What happens then, when all the petrol and diesel cars, motorbikes, trucks and trains go fully electric and carbon neutral? Will that be the end of it?
Of course not. As many have said before me, we (people) are the carbon they’re really after.
I believe that in the near future, every citizen will be allocated a monthly personal carbon allowance. Every activity will be measured for Co2 emissions. Whether that’s travelling, working, socialising, heating your home, food intake etc, everything will be assigned a carbon rating.
Each citizen will have a social credit score. This will be tied in with a centralised digital currency. Cash is being phased out. It’s very nearly obsolete. It’ll be very easy at that point to tax citizens for infractions like exceeding your monthly Co2 allowance.
They’ve thought of everything.
