Pretty Soon You Won’t Be Able To Say Anything For Fear Of Losing Your Job

Gina Carano has been kicked off the TV Show The Mandalorian. I’ve yet to see it but I’m told it’s terrific. Carano, a Donald Trump supporter, posted on Instagram about the treatment of Conservatives in America. She wrote:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbours … even by children … Because history is edited, most people today don’t realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbours hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”

Carano has previously come under fire for taking the mickey out of those who state their preferred pronouns online. She placed the words “beep/bop/boop” on her Twitter profile. She was accused of hate speech for doing that. I’m beginning to like her. She’s also expressed her belief that the US Presidential election was rigged and that Trump was robbed. Comparing beleaguered Trump supporters to Jews in Nazi Germany is taboo though and she’s out.

Lucasfilm announced there were “no plans” for the actress to come back after her “abhorrent and unacceptable” posts on social media. Abhorrent and unacceptable? Do me a favour! Her post was melodramatic, over the top for sure, but then she’s an actress! She’s a diva! It’s a ridiculous and even childish analogy, comparing the treatment of Trump supporters with a people who were rounded-up, tortured and gassed to death, just for existing. But it is NOT anti-Semitic in the slightest. It doesn’t matter. Her cancellation was called for and her bosses and her talent agency obliged. Where does this end? If she sues for unfair dismissal she’ll win, but she won’t as she’ll never get another gig.

It’s everywhere today. KPMG UK boss Bill Michael has been forced to step down because some staff were “offended” at his comments during a Zoom call. During the call, Michael told his work-from-home staff to stop complaining about their bonuses and the pandemic and also dismissed the notion of unconscious bias as “complete and utter crap.” Cue staff meltdown and he’s gone too! One employee said; “There’s no such thing as unconscious bias?! Are you joking? Please do your research before making such statements. Check your privilege.”

I’ve warned you on The Richie Allen Radio Show to be very very careful what you post on social media. You might lose your job. It doesn’t matter how mild or moderate your opinion is, or even if you’re right. If the cancel mob say that it is hateful, hurtful or dangerous, you’ll be on your bike. The point of this in my opinion, is to encourage us to self-censor, the most insidious form of censorship there is. Carano, the KPMG guy and everyone else on the receiving end of cancel culture, remind us that we might be next. There’s no longer any room for nuance, context, being misinformed, being a bit thick, being cheeky or even being wrong. Don’t we have the right to be wrong? No. Newspeak is here now. You’d better get used to it.
