“Transphobia is very real” and “this debate gets very heated,” said Labour MP James Murray this morning. Murray was speaking to Talk Radio presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer.
She had asked him if he agreed with his colleague Charlotte Nichols, the shadow equalities minister. She’s accused critics of trans swimmer Lia Thomas of “lazy transphobia.”
“I’m a woman,” said Hartley-Brewer. “I know what a woman is. Trans women are not adult women, they are biological males.”
She went on, “If a biological man is competing against women, he has an unfair advantage. It’s cheating, isn’t it? Is that lazy transphobia?”
“I believe that trans women are women,” said the gormless Labour MP Murray.
“Really?” asked Hartley-Brewer. “So it’s absolutely fine for a biological man who says that he is a woman, who’s got tackle intact, all the benefits of male puberty, strength height and everything, for them to compete against women in sport is absolutely fine and fair? You think that is the case?”
Murray blinked and said that the individual sporting bodies were laying out the rules and regulations etc. etc.
