A comedian has claimed that high street Christmas lights should be axed this year.
Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Ava Vidal said that the Oxford Street Christmas lights, due to be switched on this evening, are an insult to those who are struggling to pay their energy bills. She told Susanna Reid:
“There’s some kind of apathy going on, some kid of cognitive dissonance, some kind of not appreciating the situation that we’re all in.
And no, I don’t think while people are struggling to put electricity into their homes, why we should have Christmas lights this year.
We need to acknowledge stuff. It’s just like we’re sleepwalking through life. Covid happened and we just decided it’s not happening anymore. The cost of living crisis, we just decided it’s not happening anymore.
It’s like we need to wake up basically.”
'Do you feel like it's an insult to people who can't afford to switch their own appliances on, to have such a mega display of [Christmas] lights?'
