UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said this morning, that sanctioning Russia will worsen the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, but that doing nothing would be worse.
Truss was quizzed by Tory MP Mark Harper, on the “significant economic cost” to the public of sanctioning Russia. She said:
“Of course there will be an economic cost for British people from these sanctions in terms of their energy bills and their cost-of-living.But that cost is nothing compared to the cost of the people of Ukraine… and it is also not compared to the cost of allowing Putin to succeed. Because what we know is if Putin does not lose in Ukraine, this will not be the limit of his ambitions.”
Hang on a second, but haven’t we heard this one before? Remember “three weeks to flatten the curve?” Remember “by locking down now, we’ll avoid much greater harm later?”
Yes, the rhetoric is all too familiar. They painted Covid-19 as a war against a virus. They told us that lockdowns would be painful but that it would all be worth it in terms of lives saved. It was a massive lie.
Now, they’re telling us that we must wage war on Russian imperialism. They tell us that, as “we can’t fight Putin by air, land or sea, we must instead impose financial restrictions on his government.”
“Yes”, they say, “it’ll mean the cost-of-living will skyrocket in the UK and plunge God knows how many people into abject poverty, but it’ll be worth it in the end.”
I’m getting the hang of this scam now.
