Love Actually director Richard Curtis has admitted that watching his iconic Christmas film makes him feel “uncomfortable” and “a little bit” stupid, due to its lack of diversity.
Curtis was speaking to ABC’s Diane Sawyer ahead of the 20th anniversary of the film’s release. ABC has produced a documentary entitled “The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later.”
According to the Mail Online:
(Curtis) admitted he thinks Love Actually is ‘out of date’ in some moments.
‘There are things you’d change, but thank god, society is, you know, changing. So, my film is bound, in some moments, to feel, you know, out of date,’ he said.
To which Diane, 76, asked: ‘What’s the one that makes you wince?’
Richard admitted the movie’s ‘lack of diversity’ makes him feel ‘uncomfortable’ now as he also addressed his romances between bosses and employees in the film.
‘I mean, there are things about the film, you know, the lack of diversity makes me feel uncomfortable and a bit stupid,’ he said.
‘You know, I think there are sort of three plots that have sort of bosses and people who work for them.’
Oh go and fuck off Richard.
The film is brilliant. The casting is exceptional. You and your staff chose the best actors and actresses for the roles and their ethnicity probably never entered your head.
And guess what? Office romances including those between bosses and employees have been around since Moses was a boy.
I wonder if they’ll slap a trigger warning on it this Christmas?
SOME VIEWERS MAY BE OFFENDED AT THE LACK OF DIVERSITY IN THIS FILM
Don’t bet against it.
